Robert Knoke is the Berlin-based artist making blotchy black images of fashion and art's best love figures.

The Berlin-based, post-Expressionist artist Robert Knoke has an urgent interest: depicting his subjects in hardcore, kinetic squiggles with stoic intensity.

Armed with an insane aptitude for drawing, print-making and graphic design, Knoke creates artworks that radiate with erotic yearning, transgressive deviance and avant-garde gusto. Known for his visceral portraiture and bold mixed-media pieces, Knoke’s work features influential figures across the arts including Nicola Formichetti, Rick Owens, Marc Jacobs, Bret Easton Ellis and Terence Koh. Making the most innervating compositions from a sincere and affectionate place, his work explores pop-iconography from a darker, harder-edged angle.

Since his arrival on the global art scene in the early nineties (he flits between Berlin, London and NYC), Knoke has been carrying favour with the alternative fashion and music crowd, recognized for his blotchy, dark draftsmanship. He’s done countless portraits of legit celebs, fringey freaks and no-names alike and tends to show his stuff at avant-garde galleries, concept stores, art fairs and via pop-ups. With a recently released book Robert Knoke Black Material, his portraits are currently on display at V Group World.
i-D Online caught up with the kinetic Künstler in NYC’s Lower East Side…

What’s your work all about?
My genre is ‘Portraiture’, but I don’t define myself as a pure portraitist. My work is somewhere between drawing, painting and abstraction. It’s about figure without being figurative in a narrative sense.

What materials do you use to produce your work?
I use grease pencils, rolling-ball ink pens, Sharpies, tissue paper, a patchwork of cardboard pieces for a canvas and digital photos of my subjects that I tend to shoot myself.

Who’s on your radar right now?
Ai Wei Wei for his artistic integrity and intellectual courage.

What’s your favourite piece?
Hmm, my rendering of glam-punker Kembra Pfahler is especially poignant. It’s all about sexual politics and identity. Her portrait is perhaps my most auspicious work and I love her post-gender ‘pandrogynous’ aura which I expressed in dramatic pastiche and impasto. It took me longer to complete than the others and it is riddled with minutia, energy and austerity, I believe.

What is it about drawing other people that you’re so attracted to?
I love drawing other people because I value the interaction between myself and my subjects. Sometimes it is a deep relationship and other times it is just superficial but it always forces a kind of introspection and self-awareness that I really cherish.

Making of Master Of The Road - Yokohama

Here's how it's like storyboarding a 3d commercial for 'Yokohama' entitled Masters of the Road featuring Samurai bikers, love to see their detailed drawings and their concept phase.

The commercial is set in Japan’s Sengoku or Warring States period (mid 15th century to early 17th century) and portrays armoured samurai warriors making high speed charges in various conditions while riding Yokohama tyres in place of their trusty steeds.
The samurai figure was chosen for both its strongly identifiable connection with Japan and to represent the performance qualities embodies in Yokohama tyres. The manufacturer reports that the “Master of the Road” commercial was shown in a number of countries, primarily Russia, and in these markets it inspired great public interest in the samurai and “dramatically improved” the Yokohama brand’s recognition and performance. Awards committee chairman Toshiaki Nozue commented “this is a good piece of work. It represents the product well and it has strong visual impact and a sense of speed.” The commercial received positive feedback for both its concept and planning and the quality of its execution. McCann Erickson Japan Inc. was responsible for the production.

The "Japan IAA Best Advertising Award" is sponsored by the Japanese chapter of the International Advertising Association. The organisation works in cooperation with FOX International Channels and holds the aim of improving the standard of international advertisements in Japan.

Lucian Marin wrote a full section describing the best practices for designing websites. There he talked about templates grids, golden ratio, typography, article and comments design for Newscoop. He also wrote a few other sections regarding Facebook, HTML 5 and best practices for SEO.

He designed all the diagrams used in the book. He used a black and white style on a math paper. He tried to simply and clarify every step showed on each diagram. It’s not an easy process as it seems. You have to conceptualize the whole process and then create each step displayed in the diagram.

Street Fighter Legacy

Street Fighter is one of the most popular, enduring action video game series the world has ever known. Whether it played the centrepiece of entertainment on the Sega Megadrive in the early 1990s or recently recaptured the imagination of fans on the Xbox360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, almost everyone of a certain generation battled their friends on Street Fighter. Pushing aside earlier live action adaptations that never lived up to expectation, it begs the question why a well-crafted Street Fighter movie was never produced.

Instant Logo

Why not instant logo? We have instant coffee, instant noodles, instant photos, so why not instant logos? when an errant spam email reached me touting "a great logo - in just a few minutes, risk free", our first instinct was mock amazement: "Oooh, look! What specialised templates they have!" and "What exclusive pre-made designs!" The derisive comments one usually saves for Clip Art were soon followed by hysterical laughter and contemptuous snorts.

But once the noise died down, the truth sank in pretty quickly - people buy it. Once armed with a computer and cable connection, the world is your oyster. So why pay thousands of dollars for a logo when you can get one for US$19.00 minus the likelihood of the design firm disagreeing with you? (logofury, logoinstant)

To reuse the food metaphor, just imagine a culinary degustation by a Michelin chef versus instant soup and a frozen pizza. Sure, so some people enjoy the latter (it is not a crime) and the more discerning will enjoy the former. But you do get what you pay for.

It sounds easy though, but not everyone sees the intangible value of a specially crafted logo that is part of an entire brand identity and an extension of a company's communications. A logo is not to be plonked/tweaked/rejiggled. The 'instant logos' out there only make it harder for the design industry to educate clients on the level of strategy and experience involved in creating a logo.

Fundamentally, the onus is on us - those who understand the complexity of design and communications - to be effective communicators ourselves in defining the importance of effective design. Logos is, after all, the Greek word for logic, reason and common sense.

7 tips for negotiating a freelance contract

Setting your rate as a freelancer can be a tough decision. On top of deciding how much you need to earn in order to pay your bills (and have a little left over), and estimating how much your client will be willing to pay, you’ve got to take a real look at your work and evaluate how much it's worth. And once you’ve spent all that time and energy figuring out your rates, a client will come along and want to negotiate an entirely different rate. Instead of refusing to negotiate, which can eliminate potential business opportunities, hear your client out. You may find yourself in a situation where you want or need a particular project. That puts you in a position where you have to be able to negotiate in order to get a contract. There are ways to make sure that contract is equitable, even if you have to reduce your hourly rate.

1. Let the client start the negotiation. You have more leverage in a negotiation when you aren’t the one asking for a change to standard terms.

2. Look past the dollar signs. The price isn’t the only factor you can negotiate. Maybe you can afford to be flexible on your price if you can change the timeline of the project or get a larger portion of your fee upfront. Everything, from timing to your ability to use stock elements to your ability to subcontract, is on the table when the client starts negotiating.

3. Find out why they’re negotiating. Do some research on your prospective client and find out why they want to negotiate. It may not be a cut and dried matter of price. Maybe they can handle the full price, but not on your typical payment schedule. Maybe they come from a culture where negotiation is the norm. Don’t just assume.

4. Break down the price. Not all clients immediately understand what they’re getting for the price you’ve quoted. If you can explain exactly what you’re offering, you can have an easier time coming to terms close to your initial quote.

5. Forget about one-time deals. Telling a client that you’ll offer them a special deal just this once almost always ends with them expecting that same special deal on all projects to come. It’s important to agree on a rate that you can live with when you work withthat client again.

6. Don’t try to beat your client at the negotiating game. Negotiations don’t have to be a win-lose situation. If you can come to a mutually beneficial agreement, you’re more likely to have a long-term client at the end of the day. That doesn’t mean that you should give up ground, of course — don’t let your client ride roughshod over you.

7. Talk long-term. Whether or not you expect this particular client to bring you work in the future, it’s at least worth mentioning the long-term during your negotiation. It offers you an opportunity to get your client thinking about future work, especially if you’ve been pleasant throughout the negotiation.

If, at the end of a negotiation, you feel like you’ve lost, completing the project will be that much harder. And if the client brings you any new work, no matter what you wind up charging them, it can be harder to get excited about those projects, as well. On the other hand, feeling like you’ve come to terms on a good deal can turn a droner of a project into something worth doing and make you more inclined to take on projects for that client. Do what it takes to come to an equitable arrangement with your clients and, more often than not, you’ll wind up in the second scenario.

The Value of Design

It all started with William Morris, a socialist with the notion that beauty wasn't just the right of those who could afford to pay craftsmen to produce it for them, but was also the privilege of ordinary men and women in average homes. This thought gave rise to the Arts and Crafts movement and the explosive emergence of design in every aspect of Victorian daily life.

His idea was that things which were produced in a factory could be designed equally as well as individual 'craft' works and this led to the first commercially produced fabrics, wallpaper and furnishing. Morris also realized that the value of design went beyond decoration into functionality and this idea was the foundation of the modern post-industrial design movement. Today we are surrounded by mass-produced design in every aspect of our daily lives, from furniture, fabrics, household products and appliances, to cars, clothes, the mass media and almost every facet of living you care to mention.

Every design has a meaning that goes beyond pure decoration. Design tell stories and communicate with those who interact with them. This is equally true of product, graphic, fashion, environmental and media design. A Tag watch is about performance, the Nike logo about winning, an LV bag about luxury, Haach studio about relaxation and MTV about youth and energy. We live in a world of sound bites, so stories these days have to be short and to the point or they simply get lost in the background noise. This is a good metaphor for the challenge facing contemporary design.

Simplicity has always been effective in communication and design. The Shell logo, Coca Cola bottle and Porsche 911 are all icons of effective simplicity. They are powerful mnemonic designs, which are quickly identified and lodge easily in the visual memory that occupies over half our brain capacity. However this recognition is only powerful because of the stories they represent and the social, cultural and historic spaces they occupy. No design can exist without this context and designers cannot design effectively without understanding the context and objectives of a design. This is why design is a sophisticated, complex and intellectually demanding discipline. It is more multi-deimensional as a thinking process than the law, engineering or accountancy - and incidentally adds more value to businesses than any of these. What then is the true value of design?

Much contemporary design seems to have lost this focus on simplicity of message and in many ways the emergence of modern technology has fostered this. Computers are easy to use programmes mean that anyone can play at being a designer and the craft skills that used to differentiate qualified designers have largely disappeared. Anyone can switch on a computer and pick up a mouse to produce a design that is colourful, neat and clean, with type that is lined up and as many drop shadows, graduations and wizzy effects as you can imagine. This has devalued the role of the designer in the minds of many clients and the world is now full of amateur art directors who all want to have a share of the designer's pie. It has also resulted in much contemporary design being over complicated, confusing and uncommunicative. The approach seems to be 'he who shouts loudest gets the share of the voice'.

This syndrome comes mainly from a lack of understanding of the design process and the role of design in the cultural and business framework. An understanding of the thinking process is what differentiates designers from those who pretend to practise design or see design as an 'add on' for their product or service. As Morris said, design is about more than just decoration, it is driven by functionality and the context in which it is created.

It is almost impossible to value design in quantifiable terms. Design is not just about outcomes, it's equally about the design process, which influences many other factors in a business or organisation beyond the product or communication. Often it is difficult or impossible to extract the value of the design from the product it is intrinsically part of, but there are iconic examples of the value of design. Alessi produces many products in its range, some sell thousands and other hundreds of thousands. The main difference between them is the design and it's meaning to those who choose to buy the product.

Namecards / Business namecards are of great importance nowadays as sometimes when meet people we do not have a great deal of time to build a immediate rapport, Even when you do have time to talk, people are not always going to remember everything they learned about you.

People you meet everyday — clients, other students, parents, and accqaintances — may not know things about you that you'd like them to know. When business people meet they exchange business cards. These small pieces of paper usually contain a person's name, the name of their business, and a title or description of the work they do, and a way to contact the person, such as a phone number or address and email addresses.

Create a business card for yourself. Your card should help others know and remember you. Ideally it should convey a sense of who you are, what you do, or your interests — cheerleader, class president, avid reader, or the only boy in a family of seven girls!
A business card generally focuses on a single facet of an individual or business. You may be a cheerleader who also raises rabbits and tutors younger students afterschool. Create a business card for just one of those aspects of your life or extracurricular activities.

Steps
1.First, decide what you want your business card to tell others. Do you want to focus on your activities with your hobbies or do you want to announce that you are a professional in a particular field? It may help to list everything about yourself then pick one topic.

2.Describe yourself. After deciding on what aspect of your life or activities that you want to focus, make a list or write a description that tells about that part of your life.

3.Decide if you want a "serious" or formal card or something more light-hearted or informal.

4.Using the Business Card Checklist, list the major components of your business card. Mark out any components you wish to omit from your card. If appropriate, come up with a title for yourself. To put everything you want on this small card you may need to come up with different ways to say the same thing. Look for shorter words in place of long ones. Use a single word in place of two or three different ones. Experiment with abbreviations.

5.Look at sample business cards you or your class have collected. Identify those that have a style you might like to imitate or borrow.

6.Sketch out some rough ideas of how you want your business card to look — including any graphics you think you want to include. (Your software may come with a collection of clip art; if you have access to a scanner you may be able to scan artwork from clip art books; if you have access to graphics software you may be able to draw your own graphics.) ( My suggestion is to always consult someone from the design field to maximise the professional namecard look.) Exchange business cards with people you meet

It is not easy to condense yourself down to the size of a business card but doing so may help you to focus on the most important aspects of yourself. It can also help to develop your vocabulary as you search for new words to describe yourself. It should also be clear that it is almost impossible to tell everything there is about a person from a single piece of paper.

When you put a silkscreen concert poster up on your wall, have you ever stopped to consider the amount of work that goes into it?

I happen to come across Texas-based designer Clint Wilson site (www.clintprints.com) - he conceived and done posters for famous bands such as Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Coldplay and Duran Duran. Having gone through silk-screening production procedure myself in the past, We think you will have a new respect for those posters after you see how much blood, sweat and tears are expended in order to make them. Bless is one of the hottest and most unusual fashion labels around. It was formed by Desiree Heiss and Ines Kaag, who met as fashion students in Paris and found they had a lot in common, so they formed Bless (named after a favourite Berlin bakery) in 1997, which they run together despite being based in Paris and Berlin respectively.

The Hire, a BMW Digital Film Series

Since 2001, BMW has worked with Hollywood talent to produce a series of short films called "The Hire." This innovative marketing approach has won critical acclaim, and will be ending on October 21, 2005. The films featured Clive Owen as a driver-for-hire in a series of sticky situations. There are in total 5 digital short films showcasing the works of some of the best filmmakers around the globe. All films are executively produced by David Fincher and include the work of internationally acclaimed dierctors such as John Woo, Ang Lee, John Frankenheimer, Wong Kar-Wei, Guy Ritchie and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Don't be fooled into thinking that the project is solely an attempt by BMW automobiles to promote the art of cinema. Every short involves a particular make of BMW in an intelligent mould of product placement. Other than this fact, the productions are very skillfully and tastefully created as with filmmakers of such calibre.
